Halloween is a long-standing tradition in the United States, and for many it is a night to go out and have fun with friends and family. It is important, however, that everyone remembers to be on the lookout for drunk drivers, even when they are not in a vehicle. The Egg Harbor Township car accident lawyers at Console & Hollawell recognize that drunk driving is also a danger to pedestrians, and on a night when many children and teens will be out enjoying some Trick-or-Treating, everyone needs to be on their guard.

In 2011, two-thirds of the fatal accidents that occurred on Halloween night (6 p.m. Oct. 31 to 5:59 a.m. Nov. 1) involved pedestrians, according to the New Jersey State Police.* This illustrates that drunk driving accidents, especially on Halloween, shouldnt be just a concern of those in vehicles. Pedestrians must also be on their guard when they are out on Halloween night.

Halloween is a dangerous night for drinking and driving across the nation. In 2010, nearly half of all the fatal accidents that occurred on Halloween night involved a driver who had a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).** This report did not include those individuals who were involved in fatal accidents who had alcohol in their system within the legal limit nor did it report on how many caused accidents that only resulted in injury, so the impacts of drunk driving on Halloween is most likely much more serious than the data indicates.

Richard P. Console, Jr., an accident lawyer in Egg Harbor Township, explained that it is important that all individuals who plan to go out and celebrate on Halloween have a plan in place with regards to travel.

If you make arrangements ahead of time with regards to how you will get to and from your destination, you are taking control of your safety, Console said. Under no circumstances is it ever okay to get behind the wheel of a car after you have been drinking or to get in the car with someone who has.

The consequences of drunk driving extend far beyond the legal repercussions. Many fail to realize that a drunk driving conviction is much more than simply a ticket. Those who make the decision to drive under the influence face potential jail time, loss of their driving privileges, increased insurance premiums, court fees, missed work, and of course having to live with the knowledge of the harm their reckless decision caused to others, according to the NHTSA.** It is not just putting your own life at risk when you decide to drive drunk, you are taking the lives of everyone around you, other motorists, passengers, and pedestrians, into your hands as well.

The attorneys at Console & Hollawell, P.C. have seen far too many tragedies occur because someone made the negligent choice to drive drunk. They have dedicated their professional lives to seeking justice for victims of drunk driver accidents, and they urge the public to contact local law enforcement if they see or know of anyone who is driving drunkan arrest may save their lives and that of all those around them.

Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on New Jersey this week, causing astronomical damage to many communities. Some areas of the state are still not accessible to residents, and many are unaware of the condition of their homes and vehicles they left behind. Through all of the catastrophe, many cars have been flooded and now people are faced with assessing the damage and are wondering whether or not their cars are even salvageable. The New Jersey hurricane injury attorneys at Console & Hollawell understand that this is a difficult time and they want to offer assistance to those affected by offering tips for what victims should do if their cars have been flooded.

South Jersey car accident lawyer, Richard P. Console, Jr. expressed that even with all the confusion and devastation right now, you need to get your claim into your insurance company as soon as possible.

Insurance companies are already receiving thousands of calls from those affected by Hurricane Sandy, Console said. You need to make your claim as soon as possible so they can schedule an adjuster to come out and assess the damage to your vehicle.

It is likely that you will have to wait a considerable amount of time to have the insurance company come out and look at your car. What should you do in the meantime? Console shared some tips for those whose vehicles have been flooded that will help speed up the claim process and prevent further damage to your vehicle.

As the Eastern United States stares at the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, residents have survived what is being called The Storm of the Century. Residents must keep in mind that preparedness is chief among keeping safe and secure. It is imperative to think about safety at home, work or traveling. Even first responders who risk everything in keeping others safe and secure are always reminded to first think about the safety of themselves, their loved ones and neighbors. Not everyone is involved in being a first responder; however everyones responsibilities are for their own personal safety, their family and neighbors.

Within just a few hours of Sandy first making landfall in New Jersey, SkySaver Anti-Terroism Adviser Lou Krupkin already lost power for a few hours. It is noted that individuals and families are scrambling for equipment that they should have prepared long before the weather predictions first began. Now is the time to make up for lost time, but equally as important, now is the time to prepare for the next incident. There will be more storms and emergency situations beyond Sandy.

During Lous military days, in basic training he was instructed to prepare what are now called go packs. Soldiers had a personal go pack in their shirt pocket that included a combat bandage, a pack of matches, razor blade, shoe string and money. This was all wrapped up in plastic wrap and waterproof tape. Every day, during morning inspections these were inspected. In addition to these, soldiers prepared a small go pack and a large go pack. These packs had essentials such as a change of clothing among other things and were all wrapped in waterproof plastic bags. During operations in the field, these tools were extremely helpful. Later in advanced training and combat operations, the early advice and concept of the go pack certainly made sense. Lou learned a valuable lesson: be prepared in advance.

Think about the things that are needed in the event of losing power for a short period or an extended period of time. For example, Lous family always has several flashlights in their house ready for use. Some are rechargeable tactical lights, and some are battery operated. Most of his neighbors have been out looking for flashlights and batteries for days and most of the stores are sold out. Be prepared in advance. Go packs contain flashlights, food, change of clothing, first aid kit, bottled water, small radio that is solar charged as well as wind-up power, crow bar and other tools. As a member of the first responder team, Lou also has a separate first responder go pack and first aid kit always ready at all times in my car.

At home, people should have some cash on hand, if possible a generator for power, blankets, plenty of water and food. There are of course many other items that can be left to the imagination.

As for the storm itself, by definition, a hurricane is a severe tropical storm that is capable of releasing as much energy in one day as a one megaton hydrogen bomb. Hurricanes and tropical storms have caused more damage in the United States than any other type of natural disaster. Fortunately today, with the advancements in weather forecasting and communications, citizens are notified of oncoming storms many days before they reach the shores. Imagine when people and communities were taken by surprise by Mother Natures power.

In preparation of an oncoming storm:
